MIRI: A female nurse here was scammed into parting with a sum of RM51,300 by a ‘lover’ recently.

The woman, whose age was not revealed, became a victim in the love scam by a man she had befriended on Facebook in November 2019.

“According to the victim, the suspect claimed that he was from Melbourne, Australia and after several months of online friendship, the man told her that he wanted to come to Sarawak to see her but was detained by Customs officers on duty at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA),” said Miri Police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah.

While being reportedly detained by Customs officers at KLIA, the man had asked the victim’s favour to secure his release, Lim added.

“The suspect told the victim that his detention was because he brought US currency amounting to USD500,000, and in order for them to release him, he needed the victim to bank in cash to his account,” he said.

Between June 17 to July 28 this year, the victim had made transactions amounting to RM51,300.

The victim only realised that she had been cheated when the suspect requested for more payment.

A police report was lodged on November 5 this year. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
