KUCHING: Members of opposition parties who paid their last respects to Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing today (Nov 3) had a lot of good words to say about the late Deputy Chief Minister.

They remember the Infrastructure and Ports Development Minister, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president as well as Baleh assemblyman for his vocal demands for Dayak developments and state rights and his lifelong dedication to the state.

Masing, who died on Sunday at 72, was honoured with a state funeral held at the Christian Ecumenical Worship Centre, Association of Churches in Sarawak at Jalan Stampin here.

Although PRS and Democratic Action Party (DAP) are not in the same political bloc, we still respect each other. I will miss the late Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, especially during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sittings.

He had done great things for the Dayak community. I am here to pay my last respects to him also on behalf of DAP Sarawak including our chairman Chong Chieng Jen who is unable to be here today as he has to attend the Dewan Rakyat sitting.

Masing was a good friend, a good leader to the people and we will miss his jokes. As a Dayak leader, he was very vocal in voicing the shortcomings, especially in the Dayak state constituencies. I hope that the leader who took over his duties, especially in the Ministry of Infrastructure and Ports Development, will not neglect the linkages for the rural and coastal areas and will continue the good work done by him.

Masing was a Sarawakian who was loved and respected by all politicians regardless of any political party. He was a gentleman who respected everybody, and we had worked together on quite a number of issues for the state in the interest of Sarawakians. He will always be remembered by Sarawakians for his motion in 2006 which was unanimously passed by the DUN to state out the demands of Sarawakians for our autonomy.

Masing gave his best as a Sarawak leader. We lost a good leader as he had done a lot as a state assemblyman and as a leader in the government. We hope that the government or leaders in the future can emulate his leadership.
