‘Ops Mabuk’ nets 16 for drink driving

KUCHING: A total of 16 individuals were arrested by enforcement officers from the State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department for drink driving.

They were caught during operations codenamed ‘Ops Mabuk’ held simultaneously in four districts starting from 10pm on Friday until 3am today.

Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said the operations were carried out in Kuching, Padawan, Sibu and Sarikei by 12 traffic police officers and 40 personnel.

The operations were held at Jalan Simpang Tiga in Kuching; Jalan Batu Kawa, MJC in Padawan; Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai in Sibu and Jalan Sungai Pasi in Sarikei.

“In Kuching, the traffic police arrested nine individuals comprising eight men and a woman, aged 22 to 39, for driving under the influence of alcohol.

“While in Padawan, three men and a woman aged 23 to 48, were arrested after having tested positive for alcohol through evidential breath analyser (EBA) tests.

“Two men aged 24 and 34, were arrested for the same offence in Sibu and Sarikei respectively,” he said in a statement.

The arrests were made pursuant to Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Throughout the ‘Ops Mabuk’, the police teams inspected 311 vehicles and 404 individuals and issued 161 summonses to errant motorists.
