Ops Samseng Jalanan nabs five ‘superman’ bikers

Police apprehend and issuing compounds to individuals for taking part in an illegal street racing activity at Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yakuub, Petra Jaya.

KUCHING: Police arrested five youths performing ‘superman’ stunts on their motorcycles during an operation codenamed Ops Samseng Jalanan.

The operations involving 50 personnel from Kuching Traffic Police and Crime Prevention and Community Safety Divisions, took place at Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yakuub, Petra Jaya from 9.30 pm on Saturday until 10 am on Sunday (May 23).

Acting Kuching police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the five male youths aged between 16 and 24, were caught performing dangerous stunt known as ‘superman’, which can endanger themselves as well as other road users.

“All of them were brought to Kuching police headquarters (IPD) for further action under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding, which provides for a fine up to RM15,000 and jail term up to five years and disqualified from owning a license for up to five years.

“In the same operations, the team also issued a total of 127 traffic summonses for various offences after inspecting 67 people in 43 vehicles.

“The traffic offences included plate number that do not follow the regulations, no driving licence, not covered by insurance, failure to display road tax, no registration number, modified exhaust, failure to display the ‘P’ sign, incomplete vehicle parts, non-functional brake, and modified structure equipment,” he said.

A total of 29 motorcycles were confiscated and brought to Kuching police headquarters for further action.

Meanwhile, 29 motorcycles were also confiscated under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for exhaust modifications, vehicle structure modifications and plate number that do not follow regulations.

He said the operations would be implemented continuously to detect drivers or riders who drive or ride their vehicles recklessly and dangerously, in an effort to reduce the rate of road accidents, especially fatal accidents in the city.

Merbin stated that apart from Ops Samseng Jalanan, a conditional movement control order (CMCO) standard operating procedure (SOP) compliance monitoring also took place at the scene.

A total of 39 compounds under Regulation 17(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations 2021, were issued to errant individuals comprising 36 men and three women, for failing to practise physical distancing in public.

“Meanwhile, a 22-year-old man was issued a compound for disobeying the mandatory quarantine order, which was ordered by the Ministry of Health (MOH) under Section 14 of Regulation 22 (B) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations 2021. The man was also detained for being involved in the ‘Samseng Jalanan’ activity,” he said.
