LAWAS: Centre of Technical Excellence (Centexs) will be set up in efforts to produce trained and skilled workers here.

Costing RM31 million, the project to be established under Yayasan Sarawak would replace the temporary Centexs here, Ukas edition reported.

Deputy Chief Minister and Bukit Sari assemblyman, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, said work on phase one of the project would include the construction of hostels and several classroom blocks that could accommodate up to 200 students at any one intake.

Phase two will see the construction of more classroom blocks, he said during a press conference after a brief visit to check on the progress of the project at Banting near here on Sunday.

The whole project is expected to be completed by December next year.

“We don’t have such facilities here yet except for Giat Mara centre. Those who wish to improve their skills have to go to other places such as Sabah, Miri and Kuching which will be additional cost,” he said.

Awang Tengah said the Centex would not only serve Lawas but the whole of the northern region including Limbang, Sabah and Labuan.
