KUCHING: Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sarawak has urged Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to immediately convene Parliament to table the Constitution Amendment Bill to restore Sarawak and Sabah status according to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

PH Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen pointed out that the Federal Constitution must be amended to restore the ‘territory’ status of Sarawak in MA63.

“There must be an amendment to the Federal Constitution Article 1(2), not just a media announcement by Muhyiddin when he visited Sarawak (on April 1),” he told a media conference held at the Democratic Action Party (DAP) headquarters here today (April 3).

“The then PH government, in 2019, tabled the constitution amendment bill to restore the status of Sarawak and Sabah as territories in Malaysia by amending Article 1(2) to its original form and wording at the time of formation of Malaysia which reflects the spirit of MA63.

“When the amendment bill was put to vote in Parliament, GPS MPs didn’t support the bill,” he said.

Chong assured that PH Sarawak MPs would support the amendment bill to restore Article 1(2).

“As national vice chairman of DAP and on behalf of all DAP MPs, I hereby assure Muhyiddin of all the 42 DAP MPs’ support for such constitutional amendment should he table the Bill in Parliament,” he said.

“It is beyond doubt that the Constitutional Amendment will have the threshold of 148 MP’s support in the house,” added Chong.
