KUCHING: Sarawak has recorded a positive economic growth despite the uncertain global economic environment.
This was stated by the Head of State Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud in his opening remarks at the 18th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here yesterday.
“Sarawak still recorded a positive economic growth of 4.6 percent for 2018.
“This positive growth is supported by good governance, strong economic fundamentals and steady financial management,” he said.
Taib added that the positive economic growth had opened up more business and employment opportunities.
“So I urge all parties, including the private sector, to continue to work together to develop Sarawak’s economy,” he said.
On the agenda to develop Sarawak into a high income state by 2030, he said there was a need to have a lot of investments from both the domestic and international sector.
“Investment opportunities in various sectors of the economy and the competitive advantage of Sarawak should continue to be promoted more aggressively internationally,” said Taib.
He noted that with Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), the state continued to attract foreign investments, particularly at Samalaju Industrial Park which had created many business and employment
opportunities.
He also commended Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for his innovative approach to planning and promoting regional development in the state.
“Through the establishment of the Upper Rejang Development Agency (Urda), the Highland Development Agency (HAD),
the Northern Region
Development Agency (NRDA) and the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA), we will be able to accelerate the implementation of development projects here.
“I hope development in Sarawak will be expanded by providing infrastructure and developing more aggressive economic potential.
“This is in line with our efforts to accelerate balanced development of Sarawak.”
