LUNDU: The culture of gotong-royong should be preserved in the community so it becomes second nature to them.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said it is important to foster the spirit of cooperation in the community as well as getting to know each other.

“We want the old culture of the society, such in terms of gotong-royong, to be restored even though we are living in a modern world. Such cultures should be passed on from one generation to the next,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the Gotong Royong Perdana programme in conjunction with Islamic Affairs Department Sarawak’s (Jais) pearl jubilee celebration at Kampung Rambungan on Sunday (Sept 27).

Dr Abdul Rahman who is also the Assistant Minister of Utilities (Water Supply) said apart from increasing cooperation, gotong-royong can also strengthen unity among the community.

“It is our responsibility to inherit racial harmony and unity for future generations. If possible, we want their lives (the younger generation) to be better and improve the wellbeing of society,” he said.

He said every member of the society needs to participate in development programmes, especially when it comes to improving the economy.

“We need to think of an attraction or uniqueness in the village to be highlighted. It is important to ensure that the village community can be involved in economic and entrepreneurial activities,” he said.
