KUCHING: A proper master plan for the drainage system is currently in the pipeline, said Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
He revealed that he had recently gone to the ground and visited several areas that were prone to flood to better understand the situation.
“If there is any immediate measure that the council can carry out, we will try to do it.
“There are certain measures we cannot do. For instance, we cannot dig up a drain to release the water on a private property. Therefore, it will go into the master plan,” he said during a drainage flushing process at Jalan Taman Riverview Timur here yesterday.
Wee assured that all these measures would be included in the plan as the council tried to get the funding.
Among the flood-prone areas that he visited were Hua Joo Park, Hui Sing and Padungan.
On the drainage flushing process, he explained that the council did not want to go there (flood-prone areas) and do a temporary (flushing) release.
“Of course, if it is possible to do a temporary release. But when they are not able to do it, we should look into the master drainage system and figure out how to drain out all the water.
“When it is completed, the flood-prone areas will not have to suffer from any flash floods in the future.”
He further appealed to the public to cooperate with the council as it tried to solve the problem.
