KUCHING: Ramadan bazaars in Sarawak continue to draw excitement every year, attracting crowds of people from diverse backgrounds.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said this cultural event reflected the unity and harmony of Sarawak’s multiracial society.

Despite the festive atmosphere, he said, it was necessary to maintain hygiene and cleanliness at the bazaars.

“Every year, people are looking forward to come here (bazaar) for the wide varieties of food, but I would like to remind everyone not to neglect cleanliness of the bazaar as well as food handling process,” he said during the Bubur Lambuk programme organised by Kuching City South Council (MBKS) at the Stutong Ramadan Bazaar here today.

As for Stutong Ramadan Bazaar, Dr Sim said, all stall owners were urged to adhere to the regulations set by the MBKS, including wearing appropriate attires such as aprons and hats.

He said that Ramadan also reflected the uniqueness of Sarawak where people of different races and religions come together for breaking of fast and enjoy the bazaar’s offerings.

“This is the beauty of Sarawak, thus, we must continue to preserve this (unity bond of the multiracial society),” he added.

Meanwhile, MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the council also ensured all stall operators had received relevant health training and vaccinations.

“This is to ensure a clean and safe bazaar for all,” he said, adding that the Health Department also played its role in monitoring the cleanliness standards.

A total of 500 Bubur Lambuk were distributed to the stall owners and public at the event, which was also attended by MBKS deputy mayor Datuk Dr Zaiedi Suhaili.
