SIBU: Members of the public are invited to participate in the ‘Jom Coding’ Programme.

Education, Science and Technology Research Assistant Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee said the programme was the best platform to introduce and expose the younger generation to computing, programming and coding.

He explained that it was organised by Sibu Digital Innovation Hub (SDIH) and operated by Abang Fairul Syarmil.

“To parents, this is a programme that will benefit in terms of employment opportunities in the future. Students should also not waste this opportunity and the teachers may come together to give ideas to improve this programme,” explained Dr Annuar, who is also the Public Health and Housing Assistant Minister.

He said this when launching the “Jom Coding” Programme organised by SDIH virtually on its social media site today (May 29).

Participating in the virtual launching was Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) chief operating officer Malseni Jamal.

Dr Annuar said, the “Jom Coding” Programme was open to primary school students from Year 4 to Year 6 and secondary school students from Form 1 to Form 3.

He explained that registration was now open until June 10 and those interested could register at www.sibudigitalhub.com.

The Nangka assemblyman hoped that SDIH would become the most active innovation hub in Sarawak.

He was confident that it could grow with the support of computer schools at Universiti Kolej Teknologi Sarawak (UCTS) and SDEC.

“The programme is timely and important because the future is dependent on programming and coding,” he said.

Dr Annuar explained in his previous visit to Singapore, he understood that primary school children 1 and 2 in the country were first taught Microsoft Excel before they switched to coding.

As such, he said the introduction of coding was necessary among school students to ensure the younger generation in the state was not left behind.

On another matter, Dr Annuar revealed that PBB Nangka branch was developing an application to enable them to see the voting trends of voters in the upcoming State Election (PRN) in the Nangka state constituency.

He explained that once the application was completed, PBB Nangka Branch would be the first PBB branch to use the application to understand and identify their voters.

“This application will let me know where the voters are coming from, find out how many are in attendance and how many of my supporters are present to vote.

“This also allows us to identify new voters and how to contact them,” he explained.
