MIRI: Two residents from Pujut 4 and Pujut 5 here were shocked upon receiving letters issued by Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco), asking for more than RM12,000 each in arrears.

The reason given was for allegedly tempering with the meters. Frustrated as they were never given proof of the allegation, both victims — Wong Kee Cheong and Tan Huat Kee — went to Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon for help.

“We are seeking an explanation on how Sesco could make such accusations without providing us with proof,” said Tan in a press conference yesterday.

Wong added that Sesco issued him a letter, claiming that he owed RM12,096.50 in arrears.

“The reason given was that the meter was tempered seven years ago and I just received their letter recently. Why wait for seven years to issue the letter?” asked Wong.

He said that on Wednesday, Sesco technicians came to his house to disconnect the electricity supply.

“I could not effort to pay the amount stated, so I went to their office to negotiate the amount hoping that they can reconnect the supply,” explained Wong, adding that he has paid RM1,000 to reconnect the electricity supply.

Tan added that the same thing happened to him, except that Sesco gave him two days to settle the amount before disconnecting the electricity supply.

“Sesco claimed that they detected the meter at my house was tempered with three years ago and a letter was issued and sent to me recently demanding for RM12,844.67 in arrears,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Ting, in response to the issue brought to him, said Sesco should prove that the meter has been tempered with before making any accusations or taking action.
