KUCHING: Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing applauded the private sector’s proposal to construct a RM30 million flagpole monument in Kuching.

Despite the project being heavily criticised by certain parties, he described it as a good proposal.

The Bintulu MP said his ministry encourages the private sector to help other sectors, not just the tourism sector.

“Everybody should work together to make sure our economy gets back on track.

“We should try our best to make sure that the economy can turn around as soon as possible for the sake of our people,” he told reporters after his official work visit to the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) here today (Feb 1).

The flagpole project, which would become part of the tourism infrastructure in Kuching as well as a way to show loyalty to Sarawak, will be erected in Petra Jaya.

It will be funded by the private sector as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of Sarawak as a party to the formation of Malaysia.
