KOTA KINABALU: Sabah plans to introduce its own brand of cooking oil in a bid to spur the state’s economic growth.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said to this end, palm oil refineries are expected to be built in the oil palm-growing districts of Lahad Datu, Sandakan, Tawau and Keningau this year.

He said he wil announce the brand name when all plans regarding mill construction, production and price setting are going smoothly.

“Each cooking oil mill is expected to cost RM5 million. We will promote the brand and it will be reasonably priced,” he said when met by reporters after attending an open house event organised by the Penampang Community Development Leader Unit (UPPM) here yesterday.

Mohd Shafie said the plan to produce Sabah‘s own brand cooking oil is a long-term effort, adding the state government will build more mills if demand for the product goes up.

In another development, he said the state government has approved the building permit for a furniture factory in Kota Marudu after a company from China expressed interest in investing in Sabah’s furniture sector and partnering with the district’s sawmills. – Bernama
