KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) wants to see more inclusivity in the region, with more of its members being appointed as political secretaries, community leaders and councillors.

Its president Datuk Joseph Salang also hopes to see that its party members will be represented in government-linked companies (GLCs), both at the regional and federal levels.

“The representation of our members in important roles and the communities we represent was one of the issues we discussed today.

“We believe it is important to appreciate those who supported us along the way in addition to winning state or parliamentary seats if we are to demonstrate to our community that we are its representatives.

“Furthermore, despite the fact that there is no elected representative from PRS representing in certain areas, we still have our party members there, and this is why we urged the government to be more inclusive concerning the representation at the grassroots level,” he said at a press conference after chairing the party’s first Supreme Council meeting for this year, held at its headquarters here today (Jan 14).

Commenting further on having PRS representation in the federal GLCs, he said it would be a great opportunity for the Dayak community.

“At the moment, the federal government is not making a firm decision about appointing people to the GLCs, but we request that we (PRS members) be given the opportunity.

“We want educated, well-qualified people to sit on some of the important boards of GLCs so that the Dayak community has the opportunity to participate in nation-building,” he said.

On a related note, he called upon the state government to look into the new appointment of an Temenggong for the Iban community.

“We have one position for Iban Temenggong in Sri Aman; however, his appointment will not be extended following his age, having reached the age of 80.

“So, we want to make sure that the state government will agree to have the new Temenggong from PRS,” he said.
