Satok rep comes bearing CNY gifts

KUCHING: Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki presented gifts to residents in his constituency in conjunction with the approaching Chinese New Year.

During his walkabout, he handed over 180 gifts to the recipients while another 100 gifts were distributed to the needy at their respective homes.

“I wish all those celebrating Chinese New Year, Gong Xi Fa Cai,” he said, when handing over the gifts to the recipients at Thompson Corner, Jalan Nanas, here on Monday (Jan 24).

The gifts, which included oranges, drinks and crackers, were given to the recipients in the hope that it would uplift their festive spirit.

According to Kapitan Tan Kok Chiang of the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Green Road Zone A, distribution of festive goodies (including during Hari Raya and Hari Gawai) was held yearly except last year due to the movement control order (MCO) restrictions.

“We give oranges to the public because in our Chinese culture, it symbolises giving happiness to everyone.

“Satok in particular is very unique as we have mixed ethnicities residing here and it actually reflects unity in Sarawak,” he said, adding that the idea of presenting festive gifts was mooted by the members of his JKKK.

The CNY gift distribution lasted from 9 am to 10 am. The grateful recipients thanking Ibrahim for his kind gesture.
