SIBU: The state government is committed to promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) training and education and also pays attention to technical and vocational education (TVET).

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Michael Tiang said that this is to make sure Sarawak students can master the latest technology and information in the new era as well as skills to meet the needs and development of Industry 4.0.

“It is also to prevent Sarawak students from being left behind and at the same time allow Sarawak’s economy and development to catch up and realise the ambition of becoming an advanced state.

“I hope that the association will not only encourage students to score good results but also encourage them in other aspects, including STEM and TVET, to meet the needs of the future era,” he said.

Tiang said this in a speech read by councillor Albert Tiang during the Sibu Hardware and Machinery Association 60th Anniversary Dinner and the 35th Education Award Presentation Ceremony for the Children of Members as well as Employees on Sunday (Dec 11).

He also urged the association to value students’ education, especially in terms of political education by organising some activities that can encourage students to view politics correctly.

“Help them learn to analyse the authenticity of the news, and not be misled by wrong remarks. It is also necessary to understand the operation of the government and the impact of government policies on the people.

“Since our country started automatic registrations of voters at the age of 18, young people aged 18 to 21 were allowed to participate in the national election for the first time last month.

“The voting orientation of these young people is related to the future of Malaysia and Sarawak, so they need to have correct political concepts and make correct choices rationally, instead of making emotional choices because of some misleading remarks,” he said.
