KUCHING: The Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) thanked Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for the decision to close all schools in the red zones for two weeks effective Tuesday (April 20).

STU was confident that Abang Johari had taken into account the safety of the students, teachers and the public before making the decision.

STU president Adam Prakash Abdullah said the union had been reaching out to the relevant authorities to do the same prior to the decision.

“However, the decision was very slow and it worried us.

“Therefore, we would like to thank the chief minister for his wise decision.

“I believe this good news would relieve the stress among those teachers, students and parents in the red zones,” he said on today (April 19).

At the same time, STU also urged all teachers to take the responsibility to ensure quality teaching and learning be carried out through home-based learning (PdPR).

Earlier, Abang Johari announced that all schools in the red zones would be closed for 14 days.

“This is because we see that there are cases reported from the schools which can cause the students to transmit the virus to their parents or vice versa, and there are also teachers who can transmit the virus to the students,” he told a press conference on Monday.
