SIBU: Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) president Macky Joseph said the union wants to address educational issues besides taking care of the wellbeing of members.

He said towards this end, he hoped STU would be stronger going forward because only with strength and determination could it achieve its goal.

Macky was happy to note that STU continued to receive new members who added to its strength.

“STU has approximately 27,507 members as of January this year. The number of members is increasing in every division.

“This is a great honour and the STU headquarters expects each division to work as best as it can to serve each member,” he said.

Macky was speaking at the launch of the 55th anniversary of STU in Sibu here on Saturday night.

He praised STU Sibu for organising various programmes or campaigns to attract new members.

He said STU Sibu was very caring and prompt in helping members in need.

It could serve as a benchmark for other branches.

Macky also said that STU had been successful in a paper submitted to the ministry titled ‘Women’s Clothing Ethics’ where female teachers were also allowed to wear slacks (pants) to work.

“We look forward to welcoming every branch to actively conduct research and proposals or work on such issues,” he said.

On the subject of mathematics and science in English, Macky said Sarawak had already implemented the programme.

Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin had earlier on announced that both subjects would be taught in English.
