SERIAN: A comprehensive study on the development of a single water entity in Sarawak is ongoing.

Minister for Utility and Telecommunications Datuk Julaihi Narawi said his ministry is currently conducting a research on the existing water entities in some parts of the state.

“At the same time, we are also engaging with officers and staff from agencies involved such as the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), Kuching Water Board, Sibu Water Board and Laku Management Sdn Bhd (LAKU).

“We are hoping that this single water entity would be just like Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), because SEB is the single electricity body that supplies electricity to the state,” he said when met by reporters after a site visit to the Slabi water treatment plant here yesterday (July 20).

He said the research does not involve only a single party.

“It involves other ministries as well, not only mine. When it comes to water supply, it involves so many parties such as my ministry and agencies under it.

“This also involves other agencies, directly and indirectly,” he said.

The state government had announced that in the next two years, the four water agencies – Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), Kuching Water Board, Sibu Water Board and Laku Management Sdn Bhd (LAKU) – would be merged to form a single entity to improve the efficiency and water resource management in Sarawak.
