KUCHING: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang is confident the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) will wrest the Stampin parliamentary seat from the opposition in the forthcoming 15th General Election.

Stampin has been a Democratic Action Party (DAP) stronghold since 2013.

“Stampin is under the opposition but we are going to get Stampin back, this time we are going to get Stampin back” he said after the symbolic handover of a completed project at Kampung Tematu, yesterday (July 26).

Lo, who is the party’s deputy secretary general was reacting to remarks that Stampin is currently the only opposition-held constituency under the purview of the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) of which he is chairman.

The other two parliamentary constituencies are held by Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) in Petra Jaya and Datuk Willie Mongin in Puncak Borneo.

SUPP and PBB are among the four component parties under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

Lo said there are also six state constituencies under MPP’s jurisdiction namely Batu Kitang, Batu Kawah, Kota Sentosa, Mambong, Tupong and a small part of Satok (Segedup), which are currently held by GPS.

However, Lo remained mum regarding the party’s potential candidate for Stampin.

On July 19, SUPP Stakan said its first choice for Stampin was its branch chief Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok but the branch’s decision to go public with it evidently did not sit well with the party leadership.

SUPP only succeeded in winning the Serian parliamentary seat during GE14 in 2018.

In the 12th state election last year, SUPP won 13 out of the 18 seats allotted to the party.
