SIBU: The authorities are coming up with a series of talks and seminars on consumerism to increase consumer awareness here.

A total of 200 traders and consumers participated in the ‘Challenges of Consumers in Investment’ seminar here on Thursday (July 28).

The seminar was organised by the National Consumer Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP), the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), and the Sarawak Regional Health Department.

National Consumer Foundation president Datuk Mohd Firdaus Abdullah said consumerism is a lifelong education and there are no primary or secondary schools in this country that teach consumerism issues.

“Hence, the foundation is pleased and enthusiastic to hold various seminars, briefings, and consumerism roadshows throughout the country; that’s why today we are here in Sarawak.

“What you learn today, use it as best as possible to be a truly dedicated user and understand what is happening around us and what actions we need to take so that we become a wise consumer,” he said at the closing of the seminar.

“Various tactics and ways are used to deceive people, including us as consumers, hence the title of our seminar today. We should be careful and always stay alert.

“I understand that apart from fraud issues, this seminar also shares information on the importance of living a healthy life, which is something that is very precious and needs to be given due attention.

“I hope all the information and education given throughout the seminar will be useful and implemented in your everyday life,” he said.
