KUCHING: The Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) is hoping that teachers will not apply for additional leave after the holidays permitted by the Ministry of Education (MoE) in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya celebration as it will disrupt the teaching and learning process.

Kullin Djayang

Its president Kullin Djayang said the additional special holiday on April 19 is to help teachers who intend to reunite with their families.

“Plan your destination to go back to your hometown and back to school safely so that there would be no disruption during the first day of school after the Raya holidays.

“Every additional leave taken by the teachers would disrupt the process of teaching and learning in school,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Kullin also hoped the ministry would be considerate of the festivals of other races involving the school period.

“As for Gawai and Christmas Day, there would be no issues as these festivals are celebrated during the school term holidays.

“However, for Deepavali, surely the Indians who are working in Sarawak would plan to return to their hometowns to celebrate with their families.

“Likewise, Chinese New Year is also celebrated during the school period, and surely those who are far from their hometowns would want to go back and celebrate with their families,” he added.

In addition, he also hoped the ministry would use its discretion to deal with the application of additional leave for other races, so that the additional leave permitted by the ministry would be fair to the other races.
