KUCHING: There is a popular advice for road users: when you drink don’t drive, and when you drive don’t drink.
Now, there is another piece of advice for the public – when you drive don’t text, and when you text don’t drive. And this message is from Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang to those who compulsively check their phones.
He urged road users to put safety first on the road, advising them to drive in a careful and prudent manner. Other don’ts which he said the public should take note of is: don’t exceed the speed limit; don’t beat the traffic light; and don’t rush to your destinations.
He said these measures will make other road users feel safe whenever they are on the road.
“The thing is, lately we have read news regarding road accidents due to the carelessness of some drivers, which cost many lives.
“This would never have happened if road users had adopted safety measures on the road,” he lamented.
He advised road users to plan their trip ahead to avoid having to rush to their destinations, and to inspect their vehicles before begin their journey.
“All the safety campaigns, laws or enforcement would not mean anything if we did not stay cautious and practise safe driving,” he said in his speech ahead of the launching of the Road Safety Awareness with Petronas programme at Kampung Haji Baki here today.
Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Tan Kai, who was present, suggested the road safety programme should continue in the near future.
“This programme has been held every year by the federal Ministry of Transport in collaboration with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), PDRM and Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS).
“The purpose of the programme is to remind road users to always be careful on the road, especially during festive seasons,” he said.
