SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong Branch chairman Wong Ching Yong has proposed that the Education Ministry set up three more schools in Sibu Jaya.

Wong said the existing schools, namely SJK (C) Tian Hua, SK Sibu Jaya and SMK Sibu Jaya were crowded.

“SJK (C) Tian Hua has 900 students, SK Sibu Jaya has 1,500 students and SMK Sibu Jaya has 2,800 students.

“These three new schools can accommodate the 35,000 fast-growing population in Sibu Jaya,” he said during a Chinese New Year celebration organised by the Sibu Jaya Neighbourhood Watch (KRT) at the Sibu Jaya Community Association office here on Sunday night.

Wong and Dudong assemblyman Datuk Tiong Thai King were the guests of honour.

Earlier, Wong pointed out this year was the Year of the Metal Rat and that mice had the courage to survive and thrive.

“We need to learn from the mice because the economy in 2020 is expected to be challenging,” he said.

Wong also urged the public to prioritise cleanliness in view of the increasingly troubling novel coronavirus.

There are 17 flats in Sibu Jaya, mostly occupied by people from Sibu, Kapit, Kanowit, Song and other small towns along the Rejang River.

He also suggested that a committee be set up for every two to three flats to make it easier for residents to solve their problems and improve their living conditions.

He added SUPP Dudong Branch would set up its service centre in Sibu Jaya soon.

“I hope with our centre in Sibu Jaya, the people there will feel better when their welfare is taken care of,” Wong said.
