KUCHING: Members of the public should contact the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development if there are cases of baby dumping in their area.

Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said individuals can also reach the 24-hour Talian Kasih helpline at 15999. She assured that staff would answer the calls and direct them to relevant parties, such as counsellors.

“Once information is received, those involved will undergo counselling.

“It is important that the community is vigilant and report such incidents. Investigations will be conducted to identify the mother of the abandoned child,” she said when officiating at the state-level ‘Child Protection Advocacy Programme: Love for Children’ at SMK Bandar Samariang today.

Nancy, who is the Santubong MP, added that the baby will be taken to the hospital for treatment, and the case will be brought to court to determine whether the ministry or others will care for the baby.

In response to reporters, she asserted that the decision to establish more baby care centres (baby hatches) is under the state government’s jurisdiction.

While Sarawak currently has a baby care centre to address baby dumping cases, Nancy encouraged the public to contact Talian Kasih to ensure appropriate measures are taken by her ministry.
