KUCHING: Both the federal government, the state government and local Ministry of Transport serious about reducing the number of deaths and road mishaps by at least 50 per cent by 2030. This is based on resolution 74/299 of United Nations conference on August 31, 2020.

State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said this yesterday at the Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement station in Serian during the launch of the Road Safety Campaign and Integrated Operations (OPS) held in conjunction with the Hari Raya celebration.

“Road accidents are not uncommon in our country, especially during the holiday season. Recognising this, the Malaysian Ministry of Transport has launched this campaign and operations through the Road Transport Department.” the Senadin assemblyman said.

Lee quoted the Pandu Cermat, Sampai Selamat themed by Malaysia’s Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong on April 18 when announcing the campaign.

“The campaign and OPS will be implemented during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration period which is from April 29 to May 8.

“The perintah larangan pemanduan kenderaan barangan (ban on vehicles laden with goods) , will also take place three days before and two days after the campaign, it is aimed at reducing the risk of mishaps due to the mix of heavy and light vehicles on the road,” said Lee.

According to him, this campaign will focus on seven major traffic offences in conjunction with the 2022 Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

“The offences are texting while driving, failure to obey a traffic light, speeding, cutting off at a double line, failure to wear a seatbelt, driving over the weight limit, and transporting dangerous cargo,” he pointed out.

“According to the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) research in 2011, the main cause of accidents is human negligence itself; it caused some 80.6 per cent of the accidents,” he said.

He advised all road users to drive prudently and obey the laws that have been set to reduce the incidence of road accident cases involving injuries and deaths.
