Tugboats use nets to trawl the floating debris which are transported to the city’s sanitary landfill. File Photo: Bernama

A bird’s eye view of a tugboat passing by Kampung Kudei in Kuching as it pulls along its load of rubbish collected along the Sarawak River yesterday. Cleaning the Sarawak River, courtesy of Sarawak Rivers Board, is a daily chore that starts at 8am and ends at 5pm. Boats like this one pull huge nets to trap rubbish that is 95 per cent vegetable waste and 5 per cent domestic waste. Relatively free of material waste, Sarawak River does look pleasant to the eyes, but incidents of floating dead fish in recent days speak volumes of the water quality, or rather, the lack of it.
