Tugboat, barge held for illegal towing

MIRI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) here early yesterday morning detained a tugboat and a barge suspected of committing an offence under the Merchant shipping Ordinance 1952.

The tug boat and the barge were detained during an operation carried out at 3.30am about 10 nautical miles off Miri waters.

According to MMEA Sarawak region director First Admiral (Maritime) Robert Teh Geok Chuan, the tugboat had carried out a towing activity without valid documents (registration certificate).

Further inspection conducted inside the boat by MMEA found three locals plus one Indian and Indonesian nationals onboard.

“All of them have complete documentations,” said Teh.

The tug boat and the barge were brought to Miri anchorage area for further investigation.
