Two Immigration officers remanded to assist in bribery probe

MIRI: The Magistrate’s Court here remanded two Immigration officers for three days to assist with the investigation of a bribery case involving RM5,000.

Magistrate Nazira Razi issued the order with effect from today (Feb 22) after allowing the remand application made by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

According to MACC sources, two Immigration officers were arrested on suspicion of receiving a bribe amounting to RM5,000 through online transfer by an Indonesian agent as an inducement to smuggle out blacklisted foreigners through Miri Airport.

The suspects, aged 37 and 51, were arrested at Miri Airport around 3.15 pm on Tuesday (Feb 21)

The case is being investigated in accordance with Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of up to five times the bribe or RM10,000 or whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Both suspects are represented by counsel from Henry & Law Advocates.
