KUCHING: For the general public, one person is allowed to travel in a vehicle during the movement control order. However, for farmers who have to work on their farms and harvest their crops, two of them are allowed to travel in a vehicle.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Embas clarified this yesterday during a press conference on the daily Covid-19 update. He said he was disappointed his recent announcement on this matter was wrongly reported by a news outlet.

“My announcement was very clear — that the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) allows only two farmers who need to harvest their crops to be in a vehicle.”

He said his announcement was not a blanket announcement to allow two persons in a vehicle in Sarawak.

“Please report what we have announced. If it is misreported, it can cause a lot of havoc.

“I have even received messages from some thanking me while some were angry. Therefore, I don’t want this misinterpretation,” he added.

Uggah said a news in Mandarin had also quoted him saying that all manufacturing industries and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were allowed to operate in the state during the MCO period.

“This is another fake news. Please avoid this fake news. Be cautious as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is going to take action against those creating and spreading fake news during this time.

“We must not let this happen because this is a time where everybody is stressed and any misleading news can lead to a lot of issues,” he pointed out.
