Two jailed five years, one stroke each for drugs

KUCHING: Two local men were each sentenced to five years in prison and one caning by the Sessions Court today for being involved in repeated drug use.

Accused Zairiza Da’aie Jeraie, 34, and Addiver Carlvin Goeng, 28, both pleaded guilty in a separate Sessions Court.

Zairiza, who works as a security guard in a company, is accused of having two priors of taking drugs in two separate Magistrates’ Courts on 16 August 2021, as well as again being accused of injecting amphetamine and methamphetamine into the body.

According to the charges, Zairiza was accused of committing the offence after testing positive for drugs at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, Kuching district police headquarters at around 2.10 pm on August 19.

Judge Afidah sentenced Zairiza to five years in prison and one caning and also ordered the accused to serve the prison sentence effective yesterday.

The court ordered the accused to be under police supervision for three years after serving his sentence.

Meanwhile, Addiver who is unemployed is alleged to have two previous records on 22 January 2020 and 22 February this year and once again took amphetamine and methamphetamine.

He tested positive for drugs when he was detained at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, Bau district police headquarters, at around 6.50 am on October 11.

Judge Mohd Taufik Mohd@Mohd Yusoff sentenced the accused to five years in prison and one caning.

Addiver was ordered to serve a prison sentence effective from the date of his arrest on October 11, in addition to being under police supervision for two years after serving his prison sentence.

Prosecution of both cases was done under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and was punished under Section 39 C (1) (b) of the same act.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff requested that the two accused be severely punished as a lesson.
