MIRI: The Miri Indian Association held its Deepavali celebrations on Saturday (Oct 15) with 100 people from all races and religions attending.

Former deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam and wife Datuk Patinggi Puan Sri Datuk Wira Lorna Enan Muloon Chan were among those present.

Miri Indian Association president Cr Karambir Singh thanked both for their strong support to the Indian community over the years.

He said their involvement in many Indian festivities and activities was much appreciated by the Indian community here.

Meanwhile, Dr Chan applauded the unity of the Indians in Miri.

“The leaders of all Indian-based organisations in Miri are present. This type of gathering helps to build bridges and maintain fellowship between communities.”

He also encouraged all at the celebration to get involved in activities to save and preserve the environment, such as tree planting.

Dr Chan also handed over a cheque for RM10,000 to the association’s building fund.
