KUCHING: The Unity Park, formerly known as the Reservoir Park, has undergone upgrades to emphasize the unity among the races in the nation.

Hilmy Othman, the mayor of Kuching North City Council (DBKU), expressed his desire for the park to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in line with the ideals of the unity government.

“We plan to launch the park on National Unity Day and extend an invitation to the Prime Minister,” Hilmy stated during a special interview with the New Sarawak Tribune at the DBKU headquarters yesterday (Mar 11).

He further mentioned that they have already discussed their intention with the national unity minister, Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang, who has shown great support for the idea.

“However, we anticipate that the park’s launch will take place after the National Unity Day celebration in Sabah. It doesn’t have to coincide exactly with the day itself; it can occur a few days later,” he explained.

Hilmy emphasized that the responsibility for the park’s upgrade lies with the city council, and he revealed some of the enhancements that have been completed. Notably, themed gazebos have been built to represent Malaysia and Sarawak’s major races.

“The gazebos symbolize our diverse ethnic groups. We have gazebos dedicated to the Malay, Melanau, Indian, Chinese, Bidayuh, and Iban races within the park,” he elaborated.

Additionally, Hilmy disclosed that there are plans to upgrade Waterfront Kuching as part of the ‘Rejuvenation of the Waterfront’ initiative.

Currently, DBKU has received funds to renovate the pavements in the area.

“The pavement work will commence as soon as the design has been approved by our Premier. We only need to initiate the tendering process,” he confirmed.

Furthermore, the comprehensive rejuvenation of the entire waterfront is still being planned.

“We are expecting a consultant from Singapore to provide us with a briefing on the proposed approach, and we hope to reach a decision soon,” Hilmy stated.
He added that they aim for the waterfront to be themed or conceptualized, with distinct features and lighting along the walking path.

“As visitors traverse the area, they will experience different atmospheres and ambiences, transitioning from one theme to another. Our objective is to ensure that the entire area is fully realized,” he concluded.
