KUCHING: Public and business operators are adviced to use biodegradable plastic in effort help protect the environment and health.

According to Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, although using plastic bag is convenient, it also causes a lot of inconvenience to human health and also polluted the environment.

He said the plastic product polluted the environment especially the river, clogged the drain which lead to flood, and many others, apart from harming human body by causing cancer.

Sim addressed this at the launching ceremony of ‘No Styrofoam & No Plastic Bag Day’ campaign at E-mart Batu Kawa here yesterday. The campaign was organised by the Padawan Municipal Council.

He also encouraged the public to change their practice by start using biodegradable plastic, especially when doing their shopping,

Meanwhile, MPP Chairman, Lo Khere Chiang said the campaign is organised to create an awareness to the public on the adverse effect of using plastic bag.

“It is my hope that the dependency on plastic bag will not be a necessity in the future, as it would help to reduce the bad impat it has to the environment and also human health,” said Lo.

Also present were Assistant Minister of Local Government. Datu Dr Penguang Manggil and MPP Deputy Chairman, Dato’ Ahmad Ibrahim.
