KUCHING: Critical writing must be able to reflect a writer’s observations, said Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Sarawak Branch (DBP) director Abang Haliman Abang Julai.

“A critic should assess the quality of a work in an accurate manner based on a particular theory or approach.

“A good essay  must have the elements of  aesthetics, intellectual knowledge and rhetoric,” he added in his speech when officiating Young Writers Week 2021 programme or Minggu Karyawan Muda on Tuesday.

Abang Haliman added in critical writing, the critics should be rational in their approaches and look at what had been written fairly rather than degrade or seek the authors’ weaknesses.

“The workshop, which will be conducted once every two years, hopes to produce skilled critics capable of mastering critical literature writing.

“Writers need to have planning based on research mechanisms that will develop thinking skills of the readers.

“Young writers must bear in mind that what they write is vital for the development of our society,” he stressed.
