SIBU: It is up to Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) to decide whether to continue with the plan to open the Ramadan bazaar or otherwise.

This follows the decisions of Kuching and Miri to cancel their Ramadan bazaars this year. SMC held a meeting on the matter today.

This was revealed by the Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) chairman Dr Annuar Rapaee when he told reporters after handing over an offer letter for Rumah Spektra Permata (RSP) Kemuyang in Dewan Persatuan Sibu Melayu-Melanau Bersatu (MBB) in Kampung Hilir, here.

The Nangka assemblyman, who is also the Public Health and Housing Assistant Minister, said it was up to the council to decide whether to continue or not with the opening or the bazaar.

“This is because the enforcement of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the bazaar operations is under the SMC,” explained the Education, Science and Technology Research Assistant Minister.

“If the local authorities feel unsure and difficult to implement the SOP in a designated bazaar area, they can cancel it. As for the Ramadan bazaar in Sibu, it is up to SMC to decide,” he said.

“If the SMC wants to cancel it, we must comply,” explained Dr Annuar.

Earlier, the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Miri City Council (MMC) had cancelled the Ramadan bazaars in their administrative areas following the Covid-19 pandemic situation in the state.

Recently, the SMC has approved three Ramadan bazaar venues, namely at Dataran Bandar Sibu Phase II, Pelangi Food Kiosk in Kampung Nangka and Bandung Walk.

Dr Annuar in his speech at the event said the recipients of the RSP Kemuyang project will receive their house keys after the issuance of occupancy permit (OP) and fire certificate from the relevant parties.

“They are expected to move into their new homes at the end of May this year after Hari Raya Aidifitri,” he pointed out.

“A total of 186 housing units were built in two phases under the project launched in 2015 by the late chief minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.

“Of that number, 50 of the 110 units built by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) have been completed. Another 76 units are being undertaken by the Land Consolidation and Development Authority (LCDA),” explained Dr Annuar.

The project involves large families from Kampung Datu, Kampung Hilir, Kampung Nyabor and Kampung Bandong with a house unit price between RM90,000 to RM120,000, he said.

At the ceremony, he presented the RSP project offer letters to a total of 37 recipients. Also present at the event was Housing Development Corporation (HDC) chief executive officer Mohamad Asman Ahmad.
