KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg will make an announcement in February on his plans for the state’s rural connectivity with a new formula and method.
“This is what we have in mind and all this can be done when you have a strong government which prioritises Sarawak and its people,” he said.
However, he did not disclose if this announcement would be on rural road or internet connectivity.
“Wait for February when I will announce it,” he said when officiating at the earth-breaking ceremony of the ‘Sports/Community Hall with Innovative Hub’ People’s Project at the former site of Ang Cheng Ho Quarry, Jalan Datuk Stephen Yong here on Tuesday (Jan 5).
He believed that the future of Sarawak was bright, expressing confidence that it would be able to achieve developed status with high-income by 2030.
“Don’t gamble our future. Sarawak is so beautiful and it is the envy of other areas, so people want to take over,” he said, urging the people to protect the state from influences which could divide Sarawakians.
He said that many people sought employment in Sarawak, pointing out that there were many opportunities in Sarawak.
“Otherwise, these workers would not want to come to Sarawak. It is like ants and sugar — Sarawak is like sugar, attracting people because our economy here is good.
“Our economy is good because our state government is good. If our state government has no vision, perhaps they would not want to come. At the moment, Sarawak has become the star,” said Abang Johari.
On another matter, he stressed the importance of having trained leaders who were fair to all communities in Sarawak.
“We are very fortunate that our leaders have trained us. I did not become Chief Minister just like that, I had already been involved in politics for 40 years and the leaders trained us.
“The same goes for Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), and other component parties of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) — we all train our leaders,” he said.
At the same time, he said leaders from the younger generations were also groomed and trained.
