The late Monica Then

KUCHING: The passing of Monica Then, principal of Monica Hair and Beauty Academy here, has saddened many.

Then, 81, passed away at 9.30pm on Friday, Sept 3.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah extended her deepest condolences to Then’s family.

“I am deeply saddened by her demise. Sarawak has lost an awesome lady icon, who was one of the recipients for the Chief Minister Award for Social Activist.

“Condolence to her family, especially her daughter Jeanie. May her soul rest in peace,” she said in a Facebook post on Sunday (Sept 5).

Fatimah said the Then had done a lot of charity work for the community, the aged and needy both in the urban and rural areas.

Meanwhile, Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii also expressed his condolences to the family of the late Then.

“Kuching has lost an icon. Many have heard of the Monica Maison studio at Kenyalang Commercial Centre, which is probably one of the first in Kuching providing professional skills training with local and international certification for the youths,” he said.

He said that not only had the late Then provided job opportunities to youth but she was also actively involved in many social works, giving back and impacting the community.

“Condolences to the family and loved ones,” he said.
