KUCHING: A story about how carjackers place stickers or sheets of paper on the rear windscreens of vehicles to make drivers stop and get out from their cars have spread online earlier this week.

According to the story, it is a new way of fooling drivers so that they could be overpowered and the vehicles hijacked. The actual happening is said to have transpired in Malaya.

Sarawak Deputy Commissioner of Police Datuk Dev Kumar, when contacted yesterday, said that no carjacking using such a trick had been reported in the state.

“If it were to happen, the public should report the case to the police immediately,” he said.

The storyteller said that last weekend after he drove away from a public parking lot he noticed a sticker on the rear windscreen of his car.

“Fortunately, my friend told me not to stop because it might be a trick by someone to make me get out of my car. When I got home, the sticker was actually a receipt for gasoline.

“Then yesterday we received an email. It was a warning from the police. This applies to women and men alike. Be careful when you see a piece of paper on the rear windscreen of your car. It might be part of a trick to hijack your car,” the person wrote.

The person then explained what could happen if one was targeted and happened to remove the sticker.

“Usually when you want to get out of a parking bay you reverse your car, so when you look into your rearview mirror you notice a piece of paper stuck to the rear windshield.

“You then get out to get rid of the paper or sticker because it obstructs your view. The moment you’re out of your car the carjacker jumps in and takes off. In doing so he might even knock you down as you would be leaning over the car to get the sticker,” he said.

Now that the carjacker has your car, he also has all your other belongings. The advice given by the storyteller is if you see a piece of paper stuck to your rear windscreen, just drive off. Remove the offending paper later!”
