KUCHING: All standard operating procedures (SOPs) set for the reopening of some economic sectors on May 12 must be strictly adhered.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said new norms such as practising social distancing and having temperature check must be followed in order to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“I hope every Sarawakian will cooperate and play their role,” he told reporters during the pre-DUN meeting at the State Legislative Assembly complex yesterday.

He pointed out that Singapore had successfully overcome the first wave of the outbreak.

“But there is a second wave, therefore Sarawakians must not be too complacent.

“Follow the new norms. If we don’t, when the second wave comes, it will be bigger than the first one and then we all will need to go back to square one,” he said.

Dr Sim said to ensure that all sectors comply with the SOPs, each divisional State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) had its own enforcement team to check on factories, plantations, etc.

“The divisional SDMC has a multi-discipline team from the Health Department, Local Authorities to the police,” he added.

Dr Sim said that the enforcement teams were not out to catch people but to make sure they were familiar with the SOPs and comply with them.

“We have no intention to put people in prison. We are more concerned with protecting people’s lives,” he explained. Dr Sim said the full detailed SOPs could be obtained from the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) website or its Facebook page.
