MIRI: Nearly 4,000 runners took part in today’s Miri Marathon, with 1,400 taking part in the full marathon (42km).

Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin and Piasau Assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting flagged off the full marathon at 2am Sunday at Miri Stadium.

1,400 runners are being flagged off for the full marathon.

The route took the runners to Lutong, all the way to the beach at Luak then back to the stadium.

Runners from 13 foreign countries took part in the marathon, making up 70 per cent of the runners. They came from Brunei, Singapore, the Philippines, Japan, Kenya, India, Hong Kong, Morocco, United States, South Korea, South Africa, Belgium, Thailand, China and New Zealand.

The other categories in the event were half marathon (21km) and speed run (10km).

The half marathon was flagged off at 5am, followed by the speed run at 6am.

For the half marathon a total 1,700 runners took part, while 800 runners were in the speed run.

The event was jointly organised by Miri Marathon Association (MMA) and Miri City Council (MCC) in partnership with Sarawak Tourism Board and the Youth and Sports Ministry.
