SIBU: An association is still an important platform for any particular industry to raise matters of concern as well as to protect its interests.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang said in the past, due to the slow development of technology and information, the existence of associations was very important to better serve the members.

“With the rapid development of technology and information, people’s reliance on associations is gradually decreasing. It seems that there is no big difference between joining an association or not.

“However, there is a need for the existence of associations, and also a need for someone to lead and pass it on, especially the Sibu Hardware Machinery Association, which is based on business.

“It needs the participation of associates in order to be able to speak up more with more weight when the government formulates policies,” he said.

He said this in his speech read by councillor Albert Tiang during the Sibu Hardware and Machinery Association 60th Anniversary Dinner and the 35th Education Award Presentation Ceremony for the Children of Members as well as Employees on Sunday (Dec 11).

On the event, Tiang pointed out that not every individual can often live beyond the age of 60 as opposed to associations.

“As long as everyone comes together and pass it down from generation to generation, it can operate sustainably.

“Even so, it is not an easy task for an association to maintain for 60 years and keep pace with the times. It requires perseverance and hard work.

“I am very happy to see you are also able to hold charity activities in conjunction with the association’s 60th anniversary by caring for the elderly at Sibu Benevolent Society and the children from the Methodist Children’s Home,” he added.
