BINTULU: A woman threw caution to the wind and jumped out from the window to escape a fire in her double-storey house at Jalan Kemena, Taman Sri Pelabuhan on Sunday (June 12)

The 23-year-old, who is said to have asthma, had to be administered oxygen before she was taken to Bintulu Hospital for further treatment.

A spokesman from the Sarawak Fire Department operations centre said the victim was on the top floor of the house when she decided to escape by jumping out of the window.

Firemen from Bintulu station were despatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 11.10pm.

Upon arriving, the team found the flames still raging on the upper floor of the residence but managed to put it out.

The blaze had caused total damage to the top floor of the house while the ground floor was slightly affected due to water damage.

No other injuries or casualties were reported in the fire.

A family of five living in the house are temporarily staying in a vacant residence in Taman Perumahan at the initiative of the Ketua Kaum Taman Sri Pelabuhan Pengiran Nasir Pengiran Kerta.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
