KUCHING: Entries to the 2022 Sarawak Open – Bonsai & Suiseki Championship hosted at La Promenade Mall will come under judging scrutiny from Wednesday (Feb 23).
The competition featuring 168 trees in 16 categories will see judges giving their take on the Wrightia Religiosa, Buxus Harlandi, Podacarpus Costalis, Sysigium Cauliflora, Ficus Microcarpa, Premna Mycrophylla, Assorted and Desmonium, as well as 40 stones in the Suiseki and Fossil category.
Sarawak Bonsai Association chairman Johnson Jong said the competition was the largest since 2019 with entries coming from all over the state.
“Five judges from West Malaysia will be judging the overall beauty of each plant including the potting and roots of the plant,” he said during the preview of the championship here.
The event jointly put together by the Sarawak Bonsai Association and Hock Seng Lee (HSL) occupies an exhibition hall set up for the competition.
“It is HSL’s great pleasure to sponsor and host the Sarawak Open, this green and family event most suited for La Promenade, which is famous for landscaping” said HSL executive director Tony Yu.
“There are many categories, from miniature to giant, and the event is free and open to all,” he said.
