SEMATAN: More community-based events will be held to further boost the tourism products in Sematan, Lundu and Telok Melano areas.

Tanjong Datu assemblywoman Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu said she would do her best to look for funds to ensure more activities could be held to increase local and tourist arrivals which would increase the economies in the area.

“Today, we have just concluded the annual Sematan Festival (Pesta Sematan), and there was overwhelming response from the public,” she said at the closing of the festival yesterday.

She assured that she would work with the organiser to hold the event on a bigger scale next year.

“I have informed the District Officer when the basic infrastructure here and Sematan Waterfront are in place, we will invite Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to come and join the festival,” she said.

As a result, more local and foreign visitors including big bikers were now visiting the scenic beaches.

“In two to three months’ time, there will be Regatta Batang Kayan. We will also organise a Pasar Ria in Sampadi. And in October, there will be a picnic programme in the Tanjung Dato area.”

She said with all these activities, people could enjoy and experience the beauty scenery in the area.

“As Tok Nan (late chief minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem) said, there is nothing more beautiful compared to Tanjung Dato, Lundu and Telok Melano where people can admire and appreciate all the beautiful beaches, wildlife and natural surroundings,” she pointed out.

“I also want to thank the visitors and the local community for their efforts in keeping Sematan clean. We must keep our environment clean so more tourists will come,” she stressed.

The three-day Sematan Festival took place from June 28 to 30. Various activities held included fishing and swimming competitions, a boat race, traditional games, musical performances, a big bike display, an auto show, food, art and craft sales.
