ASAJAYA: Low hotel room prices in Sibu will help boost the tourism industry in the town, said Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said that Sibu has been recognised as the town that offers the cheapest accommodation in Malaysia through online booking application, Agoda.

“It is true that I have been informed that Sibu is one of the listed cities offering the cheapest prices for visitors in terms of hotel rooms and so on,” he said.

Abdul Karim said this after distributing bubur lambuk in Jalan Asajaya in conjunction with the 1444H Ramadan Tour Programme of the Religious Bureau of the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (PEMADAM) Sarawak at An-Najah Asajaya Mosque on Saturday (April 8).

Abdul Karim was optimistic that what the Sarawak government has been working on, including flights into Sibu and the opening of the road from Sibu to Kapit, could help boost the tourism industry in the town.

“I also believe that the tourism or hospitality industry depends a lot on demand and supply – if there are many people coming in, hotel room bookings will automatically increase,” he said.

He also informed that his ministry has announced the potential of Sibu as a good town to visit apart from promoting it to local or foreign visitors, thus boosting the tourism sector.

Agoda is a competitive digital travel platform analysing the average room rates of tourist destinations in April. Sibu, Sarawak is the most affordable tourist destination in Malaysia.
