SIBU: The government needs the involvement of its residents to jointly contribute ideas towards efforts to transform Sibu into a city by 2031.

Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew in a virtual discussion of the Sibu Transformation Plan (STP) last Saturday said the efforts should not be placed solely on the shoulders of the government and leaders alone but everyone should contribute.

“Efforts to transform Sibu are not just a task for leaders alone. Leaders and the government need their people to participate and contribute in terms of giving ideas.

“From that idea, who knows, it can be used for that purpose,” said Lau who is also the Chairman of SUPP Bawang Assan Branch.

Lau was confident that many Sibu residents have thoughtful ideas to see how to develop Sibu into a city by 2031.

“Contribute your ideas to the right channel especially on our social media. We need to transform Sibu because we only have 10 years left,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, a panel member in the programme, Sibu Municipal Council (MPS) chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg when attending the MPS 40th Anniversary Celebration online on Tuesday (Nov 2) had revealed some major projects to develop Sibu towards city status.

Among them, he said, was the redevelopment of the Bukit Assek area which involved hundreds of hectares of land including properties, houses and commercial centres.

“I think the time has come for us to come together contribute towards that realisation,” he said.

Ting said Sibu also needed to transform the economy to enable economic growth that could bring income to its people.

He explained that, apart from physical development, development to empower the people also needed to be studied and implemented.

“Therefore, we all need the people of Sibu not only those who live here, but also those who migrate to other countries or outside Sibu to help towards realising this.
