SARATOK: A married couple here can heave a sigh of relief ahead of the upcoming Aidilfitri as their dilapidated kitchen floor has received the attention of the Kalaka assemblyman, Mohamad Duri.

Homeowners Mariah Buyong and her husband, Razak were selected as recipients of the Minor Rural Project- Sarawak Poor Home Improvement Project (MRP-PPRMS) programme.

According to Mohamad, there was a glimmer of joy in the family when the government assisted in renovating their worn-out kitchen floor.

“I am also delighted because this year they will celebrate in a more comfortable condition.

“Under the MRP-PPRMS allocation last year, we helped Razak and his wife to complete the renovation of the floor, which was in a terrible condition,” he said during a visit to a renovated house through the MRP-PPRMS programme here today.

He explained that the other parts of the house, particularly the walls, were gradually repaired by the couple themselves.

Mohamad emphasised that the MRP-PPRMS programme has been beneficial in helping to reduce the burden on the poor and less fortunate.

“Especially with the rising cost of living, the increase in building material prices is very difficult for them.

“However, the Sarawak government, under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, is committed to helping the people, thus the MRP-PPRMS initiative is continued from year to year.

“The focus is to ensure that home renovation assistance is more efficient because this initiative clearly helps those who are eligible to have a comfortable home to live in,” he said.

He added that the uncertain weather conditions lately had somewhat affected the smooth process of renovations.

Nevertheless, he said that efforts to improve homes would continue in the second phase this year, and several dilapidated homes had already been identified.

Razak and his wife expressed their gratitude to Mohamad and the Sarawak government for the assistance in repairing the floor of their home.
