MUKAH:  To most people, floods are a common phenomenon and a time of calamity. However, to some children, a flood comes as an opportunity for them to swim and have fun in the river or inundated areas.

It is also a ‘good’ time for some children to learn how to swim, as for most of them rarely or never have the opportunity to swim in a swimming pool.

The scenario of enjoying a flood is very common in the villages where there are small rivers and streams like in Kampung Tellian Daya (Tellian Ulu) and Kampung Petanak Daya (Petanak Ulu) here.

New Sarawak Tribune on Saturday stumbled upon a group of children in Kampung Tellian Daya having fun swimming in Sungai Tellian.

The children, aged between seven and nine years were seen really enjoying the clear brownish water, swimming and splashing, laughing and performing free-style dives.

However, they were not alone as their parents and elders were also nearby, watching over them closely.

The river was quite deep, but the brave ‘divers’ seemed to take it easy every time they plunged into the water while others cheered and laughed.

The timid ones, however, swam in the safer and shallow areas near to the ladder and ledges.
